Design concepts for Producten

The Producten app is a product lookup app developed for store employees. The user can get information about a product by textual search or scanning a barcode. The Producten app is both available on the employee's phone (using the BYOD concept) as well as the in-store PDAs.

Producten can be used for different scenarios during a work day. The app can be used to answer different customer questions, such as in-store availability and product location. It's also possible to use the app to search for article numbers and product barcodes for usage in other apps. The camera functionalty allows users to scan a barcode without the need of typing in the barcode number or the product name.

The timespan of the entire project dates back to before the start of my internship. During the internship, I focused on researching and designing improvement points and new functionalities.

The Producten app is being used by store employees only. In the first phase of the project, I visited a number of stores to talk with the employees about their experience with the app. In that way, I was able to get an insight in how they really feel about the app and what they would like to see different.

There are a lot of other retail stores in the Netherlands. Therefore, I wanted to research into other product lookup functionalities from other stores to find out what functionalities they provide and if they are useful for a store employee app. As I didn't have access to employee apps from other stores, I focused only on the product lookup flow from other e-commerce apps.

Since the new functionalities are part of an existing app, I had to take the existing designs into account. The product detail page has multiple components with important information, so I had to take the priority of the new component into account.

After determining the new functionalities, I started with working out the three most valuable functionalities. These are either displaying additional information for the user, or simplifying an unclear process for the employees.

At the end of the internship, I delivered multiple designs in Figma and created an advice report. In the last weeks, I presented my work for the development team, as well as other product designers.
